Reading Schemes and Phonics
We use a wide range of resources to teach reading and phonics at Colville Primary School. We use Read, Write Inc. to teach synthetic phonics in Foundation Stage and Key Stage One. Throughout EYFS and KS1 home reading books will usually be a specific home reader scheme book to match exactly with the level of phonics learning happening in class. The reading scheme that is most frequently used across school, especially by children in years two or three, is Oxford Reading Tree. We maintain a large stock of books to ensure all pupils have access to high quality texts, including multiple class reader sets, a take home and keep stock, a non-fiction resource library and home reading corners in each classroom.
Read Write Inc. (RWI) phonics programme
RWI is a successful Reading programme that enables every child to become a confident and fluent reader at the first attempt. We use this programme to teach our children phonics which in turn enables them to read and write. It aims to teach all children to read and write the sounds they know fluently and confidently.
The children:
How can I use RWI at home?

of letters that makes a new sound (Please avoid using letter names with early readers.)
2. Help your child learn to read words by sound-blending (Fred Talk)
3. Help your child read short sentences using the words and sounds they have learnt in school.
